Additive manufacturing
Listen to evolving processes and characterize the material they produce.

Additive manufacturing creates materials through processes that evolve in both space and time. Temperature, melt-pool dynamics, defects, and microstructure all influence the final component. Ultrasound can help connect process behavior to material state.
Our research examines ultrasonic monitoring and characterization in advanced manufacturing. Published studies include in-process volumetric sensing of defects during powder bed fusion and ultrasonic characterization of binder-jet printed stainless steel.
Understanding a process as it happens
Work combining synchronized ultrasound with high-speed X-ray imaging explores how acoustic signals relate to laser-generated melt pools. Studies of ultrasonic melt processing further connect ultrasound, melt dynamics, and the resulting material.
Questions we investigate
- What information can ultrasound provide during a manufacturing process?
- How do porosity and heterogeneous microstructure influence inspection signals?
- How can complementary measurements improve interpretation of acoustic data?
