Ultrasonic characterization

Use sound to evaluate materials and components without cutting them apart.

Ultrasound offers a way to interrogate the interior of a material while leaving the component intact. Turning a signal into a reliable assessment requires understanding how the wave responds to geometry, defects, and microstructure.

We investigate acoustics-based materials characterization and ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation. Applications include microstructure characterization, structural health assessment, and qualification of manufactured parts.

From signals to physical quantities

Our research combines experiments with models of wave propagation and scattering. This allows us to examine which features of a signal are sensitive to porosity, elastic properties, stress, or other aspects of material state.

The broader material systems of interest include polycrystalline media, composites, metamaterials, and polymers. Research questions are shaped by the physics of each system rather than by a single inspection technique.
